Datadog offered nearly $4B for Upwind Security, The Information reports
Details
Two paths at once
Upwind Security is reportedly running a dual track. On one side, The Information reports Datadog offered close to $4 billion to acquire the company outright. On the other, Upwind is finishing a $300 million financing round that would value it at approximately $3.8 billion — just below the takeover price. That narrow gap is what makes the decision interesting: a fresh round may be worth more strategically than a quick sale, even at a slightly lower headline number.
Why an observability vendor wants cloud security
Datadog built its business on observability — collecting metrics, logs and traces from customers' infrastructure and charging by usage. Over the past several years it has pushed into security products so that threat detection runs on the same telemetry customers already send. Cloud runtime security, which watches workloads and containers while they execute, is a natural adjacency to that data position.
A seller's market for cloud security
Cloud and runtime security assets have become scarce and expensive as buyers look to bundle detection into existing platforms. A near-$4 billion offer for a startup still scaling its revenue would be a striking print, and it signals that the industry's consolidation is now focused on security tooling that sits close to production workloads rather than on standalone scanners.
